Competition 12th July forms, conditions and request for volunteers please!
Dear Members, Coaches, Parents & Volunteers,
Please find attached information and entry forms relating to the annual Leeds Synchronised Swimming Training Scheme development competition and display.
ALL training scheme members are invited to take part for competition experience in a home environment.
Competition selections:
Beacon squad: You are invited to compete in figures section in your respective age group and in any solos/ duets you may have prepared. Medals for beacon swimmers will be separate to other scheme swimmers.
E-Squad swimmers ( New Red Nex team swimmers and Lilo & Stitch combo)- you are asked to compete in the figures ' Novice' events section in your respective age group.
T.I.D swimmers- you are asked to compete in your skill figures section and duet section. You may also enter a solo.
Pudsey Pearls & City of Leeds swimmers aged 14&U- please can you all enter the figures section and any routines section that you already have a routine ready for.
Junior swimmers and above- please can you help officiating/ judging at the competition and you may also be asked to present a routine in the club display to close the day.
Display selections:
I will be in touch with all teams/ individuals who will be asked to perform at the end of the competition asap.

Competitions and events simply cannot run without volunteers. If you have never volunteered at a competition before, starting with the training scheme event is the perfect time to start with lots of support from more experienced members!
I need the following roles to be filled for the competition to run successfully for all:
15 x Judges ( all swimmers 15 and over plus existing coaches and judges/ skill level assessors for skill figures please)
4-5 x Scorers ( either have done before or handy with a calculator and numbers & willing to give it a go)
2 x Callers ( willing to read out the judges scores for the scorers to record)
1 x Announcer ( don't mind speaking in public on a microphone!)
1 x Time-keeper ( Ian please?)
1-2 x Referees
2 x music ( keeping all music for routines in order and playing them at the correct time)
2-3 x runners ( helping to set up tables/ chairs/ cables/ microphones etc. etc.) at beginning and end of each event
2 x registration table ( to sign swimmers in and hand out relevant info)
2 x spectator entry ( to sell entry tickets to dive balcony for routines competition & display)
1 x refreshments ( water on poolside for judges etc.)
4-6 x chaperones ( working in changing rooms to help get swimmers in right place at the right time for the competition and to prep the girls with
1 x official photographer ( would be nice for photos to go on members section of website)
Plus a number of people willing to man a table of club kit to sell/ tombola etc. on the day
Please can you let me know which role you would be willing to do as soon as possible! Largely you will be able to watch the swims during most of these roles.
Kind Regards
Sarah

A few updates & training friday & this weekend
Dear Member,
Urgent notice: Friday 6th June land training cancelled and Sunday 8th June moved to Knottingly sports centre ( further details below) Apologies for any inconvenience caused.
I would like to make you aware of a number of updates this month:
· Club Development Competition date change
· Swim21 renewal
· Website updates
· Position on private coaching
· Beginner classes starting in September
· Dates for summer camps
· Summer breaks
· Changes to training times due to upcoming England Camps/ Competitions ( See below)
Club Development Competition
The Club development competition has been moved to Saturday 12th July, due to the previous clash with the Tour de France event in the area closing roads for feeder clubs to access the competition and from further afield. The venue is Knottingly sports centre and it is booked from 10am-4pm. The competition is for all swimmers in the training scheme and Beacon programme( including City of Leeds, Leeds Mermaids and Pudsey Pearls of all squads) aged up to 14yrs at all levels. The competition will include figures, solo and duet event. All swimmers aged 15 and over will be asked to help officiate and Judge the event before taking part in the display that will follow the competition. We will be asking for parents and volunteers to also get involved in running the event to help make it a success- if you can help we would be very grateful.
Swim 21 Renewal
All parents, coaches, volunteers and swimmers will be asked to sign an agreement to the ASA and Wavepower code of conduct, these can all be viewed and downloaded on our website www.synchroleeds.org under the tab: Members and then Resources
Website updates
New skill levels and figures are all available via website links under members and resources, and the calendar has been reinstated with dates for upcoming planned holiday breaks from the programme and also competitions until December. Please continue to check the blog for new information and as a record of outgoing communication.
Position on Private Coaching
The City of Leeds SSC and Leeds City Council training scheme do not offer private coaching sessions or allow private sessions to run during training scheme/ club time.
Individuals wishing to enquire into private sessions should contact a coach directly and liase with them externally to the programme. The Head Coach (Sarah Speers) does not conduct private sessions. All private sessions are carried out at the coaches and parents own risk.
Beginner Classes starting in September
If you know someone who may be interested in our Synchro lessons, they can view the beginners link on home page of website and find a booking form for September classes to reserve a place.

SYNCHRO PETITION
Dear Members,
I am sure many of you are aware of the devastating cuts Synchro have recently been given by UK Sport. To clarify, UK Sport funds the Elite programmes in the country which for Synchro has included a squad of 9-12 full time athletes training in Aldershot and competing at European, World and Olympic Level for the past seven years. It also included Junior funding to compete at elite international events.
The funding cut plans to eliminate this structure which is highly disappointing for the sport after achieving every target set out by UK Sport.
Please can you follow the link below to register a vote against the decision made to by UK Sport.
http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/60290
I would also like to reassure you that the funding in place for the Leeds Beacon Programme, Leeds City Council Training Scheme, for my role of Full Time Development Coach, and for the new role we hope to advertise soon of the Part Time Development Coach are in a separate funding stream with Sport England. Sport England focuses on participation and on developing athletes up to Elite Level where UK Sport funding then takes over. The England Talent programmes with the ASA are also separate to this funding and these programmes which develop athletes age 10-18 currently will continue. British Swimming are hoping to appeal the decision by UK Sport and will be working out a strategy for the future.
A large part of my role working with the Clubs and Council in Leeds is to ensure that the Leeds programme goes from strength to strength and is able to continue at current levels of service in the future. Our ambition is to continue to provide children in Leeds with the opportunity to take part in synchronised swimming and to reach their potential in the sport. We have high targets set to increase participation in the clubs and lessons, and improving our National ranking, to ensure that this work is sustained. I am sure as parents and members of the training scheme and the clubs that you will support this work. If you are interested in helping with this in any way, by being on the committee or are interested in being a coach/ supporting development in schools/ advertising please let our Club Secretary Jo Boulter know secretary@synchroleeds.org
Finally if…..
Yo You believe that Women's sport deserves recognition and support
Ø You understand and value the ethics provided by Team sport
Ø You were enthralled by the variety demonstrated at London 2012
Ø Your view of Olympic Legacy is to 'inspire the next generation' – not to shatter the dreams of an entire Sport
Ø You believe that any minority Sport has a place within the UK's sporting future
Ø You buy your lottery tickets and are bemused by some of the central decisions being made
Pl then please sign the petition are share with others that do!
M Many Thanks
S Sarah Speers

Sport relief event Wednesday 5th February
We are taking part in a Sport relief event next Wednesday to promote the sport and the event. This is only for swimmers who usually attend this session. As part of the promotion of sport relief, we will be swimming a routine and doing this with lots of sport relief stickers on hats and costumes ( they come off!)
Please can all swimmers wear a black costume and white hat to stick to the white and red stickers on as these will look the most effective!
The routine and patterns we will be swimming will be worked out tonight ( will be from the Xmas show)
I am handing out permission slips tonight to get back to me. Your child CANNOT be involved in the filming of this session unless I have the permission slips signed. We will organise a coach to work with any swimmers without consent forms so they can attend the session but we would like as many swimmers to be involved in this fun charity event!
If you wish to attend but have not physically filled in a form tonight from me, please can you complete the attached form and hand it to me/ email it to me ASAP.
Kind Regards
Sarah

News and flexibility!
Dear Parent/ Guardian
This week I am distributing flexibility log books to help all swimmers achieve their flexibility goals this season. The intention is for swimmers to record their flex sessions and measurements which we will do at club each month, but you are also welcome to do at home. Your support in this area would be really beneficial in helping your child achieve their next skill level and reach a higher level in Synchro long term.
We are going through the stretches each session to ensure swimmers understand the descriptions.
In one month time I will ask swimmers to bring the booklets in for me to look through to see how well they are doing, or go through any questions they may have.
We also have some exciting news for future sessions:
Wednesday 5th February- Sport relief press event. What’s involved? Wearing sport relief stickers all over hats and cossies ( temporarily) whilst making nice patterns and doing synchro to promote the event and swimathon which City of Leeds SSC have been involved with each year ( used to be Marie Curie Cancer Care). Photos will be taken for press and local newspapers will be invited and potentially local television. Permission forms will be distributed and if you normally attend the session and your child would like to be involved you will need to sign these
Wednesday 12th February- Alan March- sports commentator and host currently working on Splash will come to the club to give Synchro a try! ( and find out how hard it is) This will feature on his youtube channel ‘ Alan March Sport TV’ to promote the club and the sport. A small group of swimmers will be involved in helping Alan to learn the movements and show him how it’s done! This is Alans website http://www.alanmarchsport.com/
Best Wishes
Sarah
